will ferrell, july 16, comedian birthdaysWill Ferrell  is one of the biggest names on the comedy scene. Starting on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, this funny man made a name for himself by doing such iconic impersonations as Alex Trebek, John Lipton, and Charlton Heston.  He was nominated for an Emmy award for his portrayal of George W. Bush and not for showing his butt crack.  On his last episode of SNL, he played the lead in every skit.  It is a feat not attempted since — the egos are too small.

Since leaving television, he has had success in ANCHORMAN, TALLADEGA NIGHTS and ELF. He has been in disasters such as KICKING & SCREAMING, BLADES OF GLORY, and LAND OF THE LOST.

His last film CASA DE MI PADRE is considered under the Geneva Convention as torture and ‘cruel and unusual punishment’.

Phyllis Diller, July 17, comedian birthdays

In a world where icon is thrown about, Phyllis Diller lives up to the word.

Starting in the very male dominated world of stand-up comedy, this lady dared to take on the precepts of what an entertainer could be.  With her wild dresses, wilder hair and prop cigarette holder, Phyllis Diller took the supper club stages by storm.  Her initial booking at the Purple Onion club for two weeks turned into an 18-month sold-out stand. Some call it iconic; some call it being a stage hog.

This woman worked with such greats as Jack Benny, Jack Paar, and Groucho Marx.  She made such an impression on Bob Hope that he took her on his USO tours of Vietnam, entertaining the troops with her wit and not by stripping.

Her career as a stage performer never translated into a major movie or television career.  She can been seen in sitcoms throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s as well as the movies BOY, DID I GET A WRONG NUMBER, THE ADDING MACHINE, and THE PRIVATE NAVY OF SGT. O’FARRELL.

Lately she can be heard in voiceover roles for A BUG’S LIFE, THE WILD THORNBERRYS and THE POWERPUFF GIRLS. After five decades in show business, this lady is still giving it her all.

Don Knotts, July 21, comedian birthdays

Barney Fife–need we say more?

Don Knotts was a legendary comic force of both television and movies. The actor worked in radio and on stage, but his first big break was a regular gig on THE STEVE ALLEN PLYMOUTH SHOW, which begs the question–Who is Steve Allen Plymouth?

This led to THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and his five Emmy Awards.  At that time, he was beating Andy 5-0.

This success catapulted him into a Universal movie contract with such films as THE INCREDIBLE MR. LIMPET, THE RELUCTANT ASTRONAUT, THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST and THE GHOST AND MR. CHICKEN.

He hit success in the later years by appearing as Mr. Furley on THREE’S COMPANY.  He never got to work with Suzanne Summers but got to work with John Ritter for years.  For this he never forgave the producers.

Robin Williams, July 21, comedian birthdaysRobin Williams  got his first big break by playing an illegal alien–Mork from Ork on the television show Mork & Mindy.  This stint turned into a successful stand-up career.  Some of his more famous lines are “Cocaine is God’s way of telling you you are making too much money”, “Ballet: Men wearing pants so tight that you can tell what religion they are” and”I went to rehab in wine country just to keep my options open.”  In 1997 he was voted in Entertainment Weekly as ‘the funniest man alive’ which means a whole lot of comics must have died that year.  He has become a legendary screen presence.  He won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting which proves he can act.  Also made RV, What Dreams May Come and Toys which proves he can’t.  Throughout the ups and downs of his career- the world has discovered two things about Robin Williams.  First, he is not afraid of nudity (see World’s Greatest Dad and The Fisher King) and second, other comics will not go on stage if he is in the audience (see ‘having your material stolen’).
Jon Lovitz, July 21, comedian birthdaysJon LovitzJon Lovitz had his first big impact on US culture by appearing on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s. Some of his more famous characters were Mephistopheles, Annoying Man, Master Thespian and  Eddie Spimozo-the liar.  Some of his catch phrases were “Yeah, that’s the ticket” and “Acting!”.  Arguably his greatest successes on the Silver Screen have been in smaller roles such as A League of Their Own, The Producers and Big.  He is known for saying to Conan O’Brien “I heard you call me immature earlier.  Well, you’re just a big poop-head.”  Fun fact–Jon has a twin sister.  We just hope it is not identical.  Today, he owns his own comedy club and has gone on the record for disagreeing with the statement ‘the rich don’t pay their fair share’.  Some say he is being truthful while others say it is “Acting!”

David Spade, July 22, Comedian birthdaysDavid Spade

David Spade is yet another alum of Saturday Night Live in the 1990s.  His biggest contribution to the show was his Hollywood Minute where he lampooned cinema stars.  His character for Dick Clarke Productions where he doesn’t know any celebrity was another jab at the famous.  After his initial stint on late night television, David attempted a movie career.  He made Police Academy 4, Coneheads and PCU.  This trio of bombs even scared the Russians.  Teaming up with Chris Farley, he had much success with Tommy Boy and Black Sheep.  After his movie career began to wane, David went back to small screen success with Just Shoot Me! and Rules of Engagement.  His biggest solo successes have been Joe Dirt and The Emperor’s New Groove.

Albert Brooks, July 22, Comedian BirthdaysAlbert J BrooksAlbert Brooks is a comedy filmmaker who has never been given his due.  He made short clips for the first season of Saturday Night Live, decades before The Lonely Island crew crafted films.  He recorded the brilliant comedy album Comedy Minus One where the audience acted along with Albert.  Eventually he branched off to his own making a trio of brilliant films–Real Life, Modern Romance and Lost in America.  Though they did not set the box office on fire, many consider them cult classics of modern humor.  He worked with Meryl Streep in Defending Your Life and Sharon Stone in The Muse.  He made them both keep their clothes on for their roles.  Fun fact–his brother is Super Dave Osborne so Albert knows how to be mean to a sibling.  So a happy birthday to the toughest Jewish gangster (Drive) who was robbed of his Oscar.
