ACTUAL crash test dummies.

At the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety‘s Vehicle Research Center, crash test dummies take the place of human occupants as test vehicles are crashed in order to test how safe vehicles are and how to make them safer. If you’ve ever walked away from a car crash, then chances are that a crash test dummy is at least partially responsible for it.

This video explores the types of dummies the Institute uses for these driving tests, how they are calibrated, and the technology they contain for gathering information.

“Inside IIHS: Crash test dummies at work” is the first in a series of videos offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the work of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Vehicle Research Center.
