happy birthday Matt Groening

Happy Birthday, Matt Groening.

And may this be just one of many, many more to come.

Perhaps one of the greatest cartoonists, Matt Groening will forever be known as the creator of The Simpsons.  This mad-man started his career with the one-eared bunny in Life In Hell, a satiric cartoon about LA and and the status quo.   It caught the eye of The Tracy Ullman Show, a program that was looking for bumpers between the skits.

Basing the family on his own — not something to brag about, really — Groening created The Simpsons while waiting to take a meeting.  Since he didn’t want to lose his Life in Hell series, he just made up the family on the spot.  This was before iPhones and Angry Birds….

The rest, they say, is history.  28 plus seasons and ten Emmy awards later, the show is still going strong.

Homer’s catchphrase, “D’oh,”  is even published in dictionaries.  Interesting fact, though: the word “gullible” is NOT in the dictionary.

Groening was also behind the cult classic series Futurama, a program about a space delivery service.  The show made fun of science fiction concepts as well as basic pop-culture.  That was something Space Balls was supposed to accomplish.

Quotations from Matt (or perhaps writers who work for him):

  • “God often gives nuts to toothless people.”
  • “When the authorities warn you of the dangers of having sex, there is an important lesson to be learned.  Do not have sex with authorities.”
  • “Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It’s what separates us from the animals. …except the weasel.”
  • “You should listen to your heart and not the voices in your head.”
  • “Doughnuts… Is there anything they can’t do?”

In 2000, the BBC made a video biography about Matt Groening called “My Wasted Life.” You can watch it on YouTube or just click the play button below.

This is just one more “Happy Birthday” wish from Comedy Guys Defensive Driving to one of the men and women who’ve made us laugh. Comedy is a big part of our defensive driving classes because we know how much humor can improve any situation, even sitting in a class to get a speeding ticket dismissed.
