Jack Benny was one of the old school comics who became a sensation on the radio and eventually television. He was the master of the ‘pregnant pause’ milking the audience with a muggy face but not saying a word. It is rumored that he one generated a 3o-second laugh on the radio.
Jack Benny’s comic persona was that of a miser and a skinflint, but in real life he was a generous and magnanimous individual.
He performed in the great motion picture To Be or Not to Be and It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World. But, the world of radio was his forte.
Basically, he crafted the situation comedy that has became a staple of radio and television.
In his career he won a Golden Globe and two Emmy awards. We here at ComedyGuys have also won an award: a “participation trophy” for pee-wee basket-weaving.
Jack Benny Quotations
- “Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”
- “Hor D’oeuvre: A ham sandwich cut into forty pieces.”
- “My wife Mary and I have been married for forty-seven years and not once have we had an an argument serious enough to consider divorce. Murder, yes, but divorce, never.”
- “Give me golf clubs, fresh air and a beautiful partner, and you can keep the clubs and the fresh air.”
He left the world on December 26, 1974, and his eulogy was done by George Burns and Bob Hope.
That’s a very rare distinction all by itself.
