Mort Sahl once said, “My life needs editing.”

This American actor and comedian has been bringing an intellectual political spin to funny for decades.

He wrote jokes in speeches for John F. Kennedy.  Time Magazine called Mort “Will Rogers with fangs.”  Over the years, he has put out about a dozen comedy recordings is noted as the first comic to put out a live comedy LP.

Mort has also appeared in a few different films over the decades.

After the Kennedy assassination, he became obsessed with the Warren Commission Report.  All the conspiracy talk fueled his act and almost killed his career.  He was basically black-listed from most comedy clubs but eventually became a counter-culture icon.

Some of Mort Sahl’s observations:

  • “Liberals feel unworthy of their possessions. Conservatives feel they deserve everything they’ve stolen.”
  • “A conservative is someone who believes in reform. But not now.”
  • “Reagan won because he ran against Jimmy Carter. If he had run unopposed, he would have lost.”
  • “Washington couldn’t tell a lie.  Nixon couldn’t tell the truth. Reagan couldn’t tell the difference.”

The smartest thing Mort Sahl ever did was marrying Playboy Playmate China Lee, proving once again that the funny guy can get the girl.
