“This is the best thing that ever happened to me,” said actor Peter Mayhew.

Peter is one of the men behind the mask, playing the part of Chewbacca in the Star Wars series of films.  For a few decades he has been a ‘walking carpet’ in the universe of Leia, Luke and Han Solo.  He admits that there is very little underneath the suit.  That must be other than chaffing.

This giant of a man was discovered working as an attendant at the King’s College Hospital in London.  When producer Charles Schneer saw Peter standing head and shoulders above everyone else, he knew he had found the actor needed for the role in Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger.

This led to his iconic role.

He said of Chewbacca, “When you consider that you’re a character that doesn’t speak, but you’ve still got to react to the other actors, you’ve got to make a noise of some kind.”

He even appeared on The Muppet Show and Late Night with David Letterman so the man has worked with hairy beasts and he’s worked with Kermit & company.

Peter spends many of his weekends at science fiction conventions, meeting fans and signing autographs.  He said, “I think that Star Wars revolutionized not only sci-fi movies, but also the entire industry in the way that things are done.”

Yes, science fiction movies have changed since Star Wars.  It gives actors a change to make some real money at $20 a pop for an autograph.
