Samurai Birthday Boy

Bright comet John Belushi flashed across the sky in the late 1970s and 1980s.

This Second City Comedy alumnus and SNL actor started with the show in 1975 — appearing in the very first skit SNL ever broadcast — and he made it “must-see TV” before NBC had a name for it.  Some of his characters were the Samurai, Beethoven, and Jake Blues.  Though audiences would cheer whenever the Killer Bees appeared, Belushi hated the bee costumes and thought it was degrading.

John was able to do such great work because of little chocolate doughnuts which were on his training table since he was a kid.

Eventually he  turned his talents to film, making both Animal House and The Blues Brothers.  He asked (in the movies) “Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?  Hell, no!”  John proved that he could be a romantic lead in the charming comedy Continental Divide.

He died of a drug overdose on March 5, 1982, leaving a legacy of performances and a legion of fans.
